Carer Testimony of the Month

“I started working for Sonder at the beginning of November. When I applied for the Care Assistant position, I didn’t expect to hear back the same day as I didn’t have much experience. However, when the office reached out and said they would love to invite me for an interview, I was thrilled just to be offered the opportunity. In my opinion, the interview went amazingly well. I had my 2 ½-year-old with me on Zoom, and the office didn’t mind as I was on my own with him, which was a massive relief.

After the Zoom call ended, within 1 ½ hours I was offered the job, which was such a relief as they offered to work around my childcare needs. I was so grateful to hear that, as my son means everything to me. About a month after my interview, I officially started on November 4th, and that's where the “story” starts, I suppose. My first day was shadowing, and it went so smoothly. It was an amazing experience to see what it would be like when I would take the “big” steps on my own.

When I was out on my own, it was very nerve-wracking, as I had spent the first 2-3 weeks training and shadowing, and I just needed to learn to do things by myself. I have now been working with Sonder for almost 3 months, and it has been the best 3 months! The office staff are so understanding when I’m running a bit behind on time or if I can’t make it in because my son is unwell.

On 26th January 2025, I had my first outing with a client, which went very smoothly. I don’t drive, so I walk between each of my clients’ houses. When I went to see my client on the Monday, she asked what I had been up to over the weekend. I mentioned that we hadn’t done much – just went to Home Bargains, as my partner, my son, and I often go to pick up a few bits and see what’s new in the shop. She mentioned that she hadn’t been in a while and would like to go. I said I’d mention it to the office and see if it could be possible with another carer who can drive. However, when I saw her later that week, she said she would like to go with me, even though I don’t drive, and it made me feel very honoured. We took a taxi and she was very pleased to be out of the house doing something she doesn’t normally do. She was so grateful that I had managed to get her out of the house, even for just a few hours.

As we paid, we realised that my visit time was coming to an end. I booked another cab home, but no one was accepting the journey, so I luckily rang the out-of-hours office number. I explained the cab situation and mentioned that my partner drives, but I wasn’t sure if he would be able to drop us back. I also explained that I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking my client on a 3-hour bus journey home in the storm, as that was the weekend when the storm had picked up. The Sonder office staff on-call kindly said it was completely fine for my partner to drop her back home.

My partner picked us up, and I took my client into her house with her shopping. She gave me a hug to thank me for taking her out for the morning. She had a huge smile on her face, and it made me feel so happy and privileged to be the one who made her smile like that. It’s moments like that that make me love what I do.”
